Foreword
Dear Readers,
Sustainable action has a long-standing tradition at HOCHTIEF. It is embedded in our company’s Guiding Principles and is binding for all employees. In our current Sustainability Report we offer you an overview of our activities and our commitment. HOCHTIEF is still a pioneer in the sector as regards sustainability and is the only company in the construction industry in German-speaking countries to publish comprehensive information and facts on ecology, economy and social commitment.
Environmental and climate protection as well as energy saving are areas we look at constructively. We have thus become involved with geothermal power, for instance, in order to produce renewable energy. HOCHTIEF also seeks to make a significant contribution by using resources carefully and by applying energy-efficient methods in its projects. In this, we have set ourselves clear objectives. Our basic approach is to accompany projects responsibly throughout their life cycle—starting from development and construction through to management and operation. Integrated project management enables our company to generate substantial potential for saving. Moreover, with our innovative concepts we offer people attractive alternatives to conventional living and work environments. This includes, for example, the development of modern cross-generational forms of living.
As an internationally operating company and corporate citizen, HOCHTIEF is committed to addressing social issues throughout the world. Our main focus is especially on education and encouraging young talent. In this respect, we see, in particular, community projects where we are able to contribute our know-how and bring benefit to the community. In producing our report, we have followed the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines, which aim to compare and measure companies’ sustainability performance.

Since publishing our Sustainability Report 2005, we have conscientiously worked on improving our reporting and include additional information such as data regarding the CO2 emissions at our European units.
We have also decided to have our Sustainability Report evaluated by an auditing company (see page 62).
You can find further information and updates on sustainability at HOCHTIEF on our website at www.hochtief.com/ sustainability. You may also contact us there if you have any queries or wish to have further information.
We hope you enjoy reading our report and we look forward to receiving any feedback you might have.
