Quality of Life
Big challenge for Leighton: In New Zealand the HOCHTIEF company is currently involved in building the Northern Motorway Extension. The project satisfies all conceivable environmental regulations. For instance, it was necessary to relocate and channel several small rivers though a larger river—without affecting the natural swimming behavior of the fish. To this end, Leighton developed an innovative system that uses barriers to give the river population the impression of being in the same waters as before.

The environment in focus

HOCHTIEF considers it a challenge and an obligation to practice active environmental protection in all its national and international projects. Sustainable construction is a tradition for us. In the USA we are one of the forerunners in the field of “Green Building”.

As a construction services provider HOCHTIEF produces waste and consumes energy. Against this background, the company constantly develops new services and products, aimed at lastingly protecting the environment and handling natural resources sparingly. One factor here is HOCHTIEF’s firm commitment to regenerative energies, including geothermal energy. In this field, we have already completed many future-oriented projects and are

working on others. The construction of innovative sewage treatment plants, the development of trail-blazing building materials and the provision of professional advice to our clients on all aspects of energy management are further examples of HOCHTIEF’s active care for the environment.

Our company will continue to give maximum priority to environmental protection in all its activities and projects. In this way we seek to ensure—and if possible improve—the quality of life. That is an ambitious goal, but we are determined to make a contribution through our sustainable work practices.
