  • Successful general building business at Turner
  • Product and service spectrum in North America expanded with civil engineering acquisition
  • North-American public-private partnership market being developed
  • Several major projects acquired in Brazil
In the year under review, our companies in the USA and Brazil were once again successful. We considerably reinforced our activities in North America and expanded our product and service spectrum to include civil engineering with the acquisition of Flatiron in 2007.

Business continuously strong at Turner

Despite a lower rate of growth in the overall market in the USA, Turner scored a solid increase in revenues. Turner has kept its leading position in its major market segments and continues to be awarded numerous attractive contracts. The company benefited from strong demand from government institutions. New orders included a US military contract for the construction of six buildings for a new administrative complex in Fort Knox, Kentucky. Valued at EUR 134 million, the contract is associated with the military base realignment investment program aimed at modernizing and restructuring US Army bases.

Strong demand in core segments

Turner also continues to hold a leadership position in the USA in the healthcare facilities segment. A strong demand for replacement and retrofit of aging facilities coupled with technology driven renovations provide for an excellent order situation in this market. Among other contracts, Turner succeeded in landing the contract for the expansion of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia with a volume of nearly EUR 175 million. In Seattle, Turner is building several projects, including the Mirabella Continued Care Community valued at EUR 112 million. The company is also responsible for the critical care addition to St. Luke’s Hospital in Pennsylvania. In addition, an existing hospital will be replaced with a state-of-the-art clinic complex in two phases in a project for the University of Kentucky. The company is also working for repeat client Eisenhower Medical Center on a 23,000-square-meter facility in Rancho Mirage, California.
As the nation‘s leading builder of educational facilities, Turner benefits from the growing investment programs for public schools and universities. The company counts renowned Princeton University in New Jersey and Yale University in Connecticut among its clients. One of the projects Turner is building for Yale University is the School of Forestry building. This building is seeking the highest level of Certification from the US Green Building Council.

In other segments as well, Turner was awarded several landmark projects. For example, the company is building a new 14-story hotel in Orlando for Hilton Grand Vacations in a project worth around EUR 117 million. The company also completed the 412-room Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego, California.

In the sports segment, we are also highly successful: In addition to ongoing work on the New Yankee Stadium project in the Bronx, New York, the company was selected to manage the construction of the Orlando Events Center.

Risk management fundamental for success

Turner’s successful track record is not least based on its systematic risk management—efforts typified by the careful selection of projects, a comprehensive pre-construction phase and clear standards for contract drafting.

ViCon technology reduces risks

Virtual design and construction technology, ViCon**, is used with increasing frequency by Turner. Since 2006, we have gathered considerable experience with ViCon in more than 40 projects with a total volume of EUR 4.5 billion. Turner benefits from this technological advance in particular when working on complex, large-scale projects that pose special demands on planning and coordination. Thanks to the dependable planning achieved with ViCon, technical risks are substantially reduced.

Green building market performing well

Turner has made a name for itself as a leader in the green building market segment in the USA. More than 200 construction projects with a total volume of over EUR 9 billion are being built or have already been finished according to environmental criteria. The company has completed a total
